An eau de toilette label gives more concentration context than the general word mist, but neither supplies a guaranteed wear time. Choose an identified perfume and format rather than a promise that all EDTs last longer than all mists.
IFRA’s guidance describes common concentration terms as general descriptors rather than strict international definitions. Its typical EDT range overlaps neighbouring formats. Mist is not a fixed concentration tier in that guidance.
Which lasts longer?
You cannot answer reliably without naming the pair. A brand may position its mist as a lighter version of a particular perfume; that is evidence about that range. It is not a universal hour count or proof that every unrelated EDT outlasts it.
For example, Victoria’s Secret describes original Bombshell Body Mist as its lightest version. Do not silently convert that example into a Bombshell EDT comparison: the separately documented perfume version is EDP. Compare the versions the maker actually sells.
A fairer trial
| Stage | What to record |
|---|---|
| Before applying | Exact name, format and directions |
| Opening | Whether you enjoy the initial impression |
| Later in your normal day | Whether the scent is still useful to you |
| Next wearing | Whether you want to repeat the experience |
Wear each separately as directed. If the perfumes have different compositions, your result concerns the entire product rather than concentration alone. Do not infer other people’s experience solely from whether you can still notice it yourself.
Quiet wear and a full day
A mist can be noticeable, while an EDT need not dominate a room. Neither is automatically suitable in a fragrance-free setting. The local rule and the particular fragrance matter more than a light-sounding label.
If you want scent for a particular later activity, test that actual point in the routine. If you are happy with a short-lived scent, duration need not be a fault. Reapplication is useful only when the product’s directions and your surroundings permit it.
Price and first-bottle decisions
Compare the selected sizes and delivered prices, then consider preference and real usage. Large mist bottles are not automatically better value, and EDT is not automatically a more complete or intentional purchase.
If you already enjoy a mist, you do not need an EDT simply to own a real fragrance. If considering a new EDT, a sample can reveal whether you like that scent at all before format questions become relevant.
Use concentration as context and wear as evidence. This comparison has no universal longer-lasting, office or gifting winner.
